Custom Built Timber Frame Homes in California

PrecisionCraft’s hybrid log and timber homes mix two building styles to create one-of-a-kind signature homes. Our unique building system allows us to incorporate any of our product lines together in a single structure. This flexibility opens the creative doors for our design team to create your unique mountain style home – exactly as you envision it. When you want the last home you’ll ever buy, you want a custom timber frame home. Timber frame homes feature large structural wooden beams visible throughout the interior which act as the structural skeleton of the home. The timbers are cut to fit together and connect with specialized joinery such as mortise-and-tennon connections held tightly together by wooden pegs.

Different regions have different traditions as to whether the timber frame should be tarred and thus clearly visible or be limewashed or painted in the same colour as the infills. Germany has several styles of timber framing, but probably the greatest number of half-timbered buildings in the world are to be found in Germany and in Alsace (France). There are many small towns which escaped both war damage and modernisation and consist mainly, or even entirely, of half-timbered houses. At Timbercraft, we have designed, manufactured, and installed timber frame homes and commercial buildings for over 40 years.

FARMHOUSES BARN STYLE HOMES

Contemporary interior walls are framed in warm wood hues and exterior walls can have a variety of finishes, including stucco, shake, siding or stone. This design style marries the sleeker texture of timber frame with the recognizable shape and feel of logs. Combining these two elements offers a uniquely rustic yet luxurious look and feel. Our design team offers mastery in architecture to create incredible home layouts and eye-catching accents on hybrid homes. Elevate these hybrid homes with other materials like stone or stucco to create a dynamic look.

Settlers in New France also built horizontal log, brick, and stone buildings.

For the same reasons, half-timbering in New England, which was originally employed by the English settlers, fell out of favour soon after the colonies had become established. Timber frame (bindingsværk, literally "binding work") is the traditional building style in almost all of Denmark, making it the only Nordic country where this style is prevalent in all regions. Along the west coast of Jutland, houses built entirely of bricks were traditionally more common due to lack of suitable wood. In the 19th and especially in the 20th century, bricks have been the preferred building material in all of Denmark, but traditional timber-frame houses remain common both in the towns and in the countryside.

From the box frame, more complex framed buildings such as the Wealden House and Jettied house developed[citation needed]. Recently, it has become common practice to enclose the timber structure entirely in manufactured panels such as structural insulated panels (SIPs). Although the timbers can only be seen from inside the building when so enclosed, construction is less complex and insulation is greater than in traditional timber building.

– Timber Frame Foundation Types

Since this building method has been used for thousands of years in many parts of the world, many styles of historic framing have developed. These styles are often categorized by the type of foundation, walls, how and where the beams intersect, the use of curved timbers, and the roof framing details. Post construction and frame construction

Smaller beams, such as 6x8s spaced 24” on centre to replace conventional floor joists, can rest directly on the double top plate of a stud wall. Either way, I use 8”, 10” and 12” spikes to secure timbers to the underlying stud frame wall structures. Predrill holes through the beams to make sure the spikes drive straight. All timber connections themselves are made using traditional joinery methods.

Mountain style homes lean into the natural wooden textures of our timber frame designs. These homes aim to bring the outdoors in with large windows and high ceilings. Our mountain style homes often have a luxury resort feel with high peaked roofs and large porches, like Hamilton. These homes can also honor the more classic and cozy style of a mountain home, like Kalkaska.

Important resources for the study of historic building methods in the UK are open-air museums. Historically, it was common for the master carpenter to give a speech, make a toast, and then break the glass. In Northern Europe, a wreath made for the occasion is more commonly used rather than a bough. In Japan, the "ridge raising" is a religious ceremony called the jotoshiki.[22] In Germany, it is called the Richtfest. Europe is full of timber-framed structures dating back hundreds of years, including manors, castles, homes, and inns, whose architecture and techniques of construction have evolved over the centuries. Straw-bale construction is another alternative where straw bales are stacked for nonload-bearing infill with various finishes applied to the interior and exterior such as stucco and plaster.

These homes can have a more traditional look, like Augusta, or a contemporary flair, like Mineral Point. In the 1930s a system of timber framing referred to as the "modern timber connector method"[15] was developed. It was characterized by the use of timber members assembled into trusses and other framing systems and fastened using various types of metal timber connectors. With over 50 years of experience here at Timberpeg we know just how exciting – and daunting – it can be to design and build a custom timber frame or post and beam home.
